In 1871 Convict Lake was the site of a shoot-out between a group of six escaped prisoners and a posse intent on their capture. Robert Morrison, the posse leader, was killed and the convicts escaped. The hunt continued and two escapees were captured and summarily executed near Bishop. Three were returned to Nevada Territorial Prison to serve life sentences. And one was never accounted for.
