The wooden buildings of the Bryggen served as offices and warehouses of the Hanseatic League. The site dates to the 11th century though the buildings have burned down and been rebuilt several times. Recently they were designated a UNESCO World Curtural Heritage site, and are being restored using original tools and techniques.
